Pathways to Professions a Major Success

Nearly 8,500 high school students, parents and community members attended the first annual Pathways to Professions CTE Showcase at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, Utah between Oct. 12–13. With over 200 industry and educational partners on hand, the event highlighted high paying, high demand positions and the direct connection to Career and Technical Education.

Businesses and education partners connected with students and the community by providing hundreds of hands-on experiences. Patrons were able to try virtual welding, infant CPR, line pole work, computer networking, simulated truck driving and aviation, cabinetry, floristry and much more. They saw police dogs in action, crawled through ambulances, spent time in virtual reality, built tool boxes, got haircuts and gained exposure to opportunities available through CTE pathways.

“[Pathways to Professions] is a great way for students to see a way to take the skills [they’ve] learned and turn them into a reality,” said Jason Skidmore, Jordan School District CTE Director. This proved to be the case when an enterprising student  from Copper Hills High School was hired for a position at Alpha Transportation.

This two-day event was a collaborative effort produced by the Wasatch Front Consortium, comprised of CTE directors from Canyons School District, Granite School District, Jordan School District, Murray School District, Salt Lake City School District, Salt Lake Community College, and Tooele County School District in Utah’s Wasatch Front South Region.
